Starting out as a training regime for fitness fanatics, CrossFit has grown into a way of life that is helping all kinds of people reach their fitness goals.
Designed to be challenging, CrossFit is suitable for everybody as workouts can be modified depending on your age or current fitness level.
As it grows even more popular, more and more people are looking for answers about what CrossFit is and the benefits of the training method.
Here are some CrossFit FAQ:
- What is Crossfit?
CrossFit is a fitness program made up of guided routines or WODs (Workouts of the Day) that involve a series of ‘functional movements’. These exercises focus on safe, effective and efficient movements like the ones you use in everyday life.
WODs are designed to test your strength, speed and endurance but if you are part of a local CrossFit Affiliate you always have an experienced coach with you to make sure you stay safe and injury free.
- Is CrossFit good for weight loss?
The high-intensity workouts in CrossFit will definitely “burn calories” and use energy. Additionally, as you increase your strength and endurance you’ll become more efficient with the calories you consume. Those who show up for CrossFit regularly can expect to see increases in body strength and muscle mass. As your body’s composition changes you will be able to burn fat and calories better than before you started CrossFit.
However, if you really want to lose weight, you’re going to need to combine your exercise with good nutrition, no matter how intense your workouts are. CrossFit has a nutritional component that recommends you eat a variety of healthy, whole foods (less carbs, more protein and fats) and in the quantities that support training.
- How many times a week should you do CrossFit?
There is a substantial difference in fitness results between those who train once or twice a week and those who train four to five times a week. This is not to say you should “max out” every day as overtraining is counterproductive. It’s also important to ease your way into a CrossFit program over the first few months and let your body get used to the intense nature of the workouts. Once you’ve acclimated your body, you can start to really challenge and push yourself.
- How should a beginner start CrossFit?
We always recommend that beginners start with personal training. INSIDE TIP: if you ever find yourself at a gym that just throws you into a class on your first day, RUN AWAY! The benefit of CrossFit is not just being in a class; it’s thoughtful, intentional, progressions that will cause lasting change. The absolute best way to start that process is one on one with a coach.
There is a learning curve with CrossFit and you will need to go through the process of learning the mechanics and movements. Don’t be afraid to try new things. You’ll improve quicker than you might think possible.
- How long does a CrossFit class last?
Every gym is a little different but at Whole Strength our training session last either 30 or 60 minutes. You don’t need to spend hours in the gym every day to see results. The key is to stay focused during your training session. Your coaches will help with that!
- Is CrossFit safe?
The simple answer is yes, CrossFit training is safe. Especially when compared to how dangerous it to sit on your couch and do nothing! At Whole Strength you will always have a qualified coach there to help you move safely and effectively through the movements and exercises. To avoid injury, it’s important to be patient and to build your base fitness levels before you push yourself harder.
- Will CrossFit get me Fit?
Bluntly? Yes! But here is the key; you have to put the work in and you have to be patient. The formula for success is ACTION + CONSISTENCY + TIME = SUCCESS
