10 Things To Know Before Your First CrossFit Workout

So you have heard so much about CrossFit and you’re finally ready to give it a go? That’s great! You’ll get to discover more about the workout culture your friends have been raving about.

Coming in for your first CrossFit workout is a big step but rest assured, you will have success and NO it does not include throwing up or passing out!

Now that you have committed to showing up, there are a few things to know. These 10 tips for your first training session will make things even better.

  1. Eat first (just not too much)

CrossFit requires energy! To make the most of your workout, you need to have fuel in the tank. However, if you have a huge meal before you start your training, you’ll find your stomach starts to complain. Have a small, protein-based snack with a whole food based carbohydrate 1-2 hours before your training session and you will have the fuel you need.

  1. Bring a towel

We train like athletes and this means you’re gonna sweat. Pack a towel, this will come in handy when the workout is over and you’re high fiving your friends. An extra shirt comes in handy too!

  1. Start slow…

Consistency is the name of the game, not a one time maximum effort. It is always better to leave that first workout thinking you could have done more than to leave having completely destroyed yourself. Stick close to the coach and they’ll let you know if you’re overdoing it on your first session.

  1. …but don’t be afraid to challenge yourself

With the above being said, don’t hold back too much. Try some things you never thought you would be able to do. You might find you’re more capable than you thought. Your coach will help you find the balance.

  1. Record your training results

We use Wodify in our gym to track every workout but there are a variety of apps that could work. One of the key components of CrossFit training is tracking your results. Jotting down your achievements from the get-go will help you chart measurable improvements.

  1. Invest in some quality shoes

While what you wear on your body is important the bigger focus is what you’re wearing on your feet. It is well worth a small investment. We have found most of our members like the Reebok Nanos, Nike Metcons or No Bull shoes.

  1. Do some research

CrossFit will introduce you to a whole new set of lingo and it can feel overwhelming at first. Before your first class, Google a few CrossFit terms to understand what they mean. Pretty soon, you’ll be heading to the Box for the WOD and chatting about the upcoming AMRAP with everybody else.

  1. Remember, everyone was you at one point

The most seasoned CrossFitters started as newbies with no idea what they were doing. When you enter the gym, you may witness some incredible talent and some inspiring people. But rest assured, nothing was achieved overnight! Be motivated by the senior members, not intimidated.

  1. Listen to your coaches

I will let you in on a little secret. The true magic of what we do is not the workouts at all! The magic is in the coaching. Make the most of this by asking for advice and taking cues from your coach. With their help, you’ll be able to achieve better results, safer and faster.

  1. Bring a smile

This is the big one! CrossFit has a huge focus on friendship and FUN. As well as working out, you’re setting yourself up for some life-changing friendships. Get ready to support and be supported while you’re on your own amazing fitness journey.

Finally, don’t forget that your first workout is only the beginning. The feeling of being challenged is one you’ll get used to and even look forward to. Pretty soon, you’ll be a CrossFit expert, encouraging your friends and family to join in the fun!
